Curriculum- For the Community By the Community

206 Kurrikulum (known in Seattle Public Schools as Filipinx American History Curriculum)

The 206 Kurrikulum is created for the community by the community. Based on Dr. Patricia Espiritu Halagao and Timoteo Cordova’ s Pinoy Teach (1996), 206 Kurrikulum expands on the chapters by including more content and incorporating social media and videos. Students at the University of Washington that were enrolled in Dr. Third Andresen’s AAS 360: Critical Filipinx/Filipin@/Filipino American History were tasked with creating additional content, upgrading graphics/presentation format, and integrating technology as their final projects. Over the span of two years, students in his class grew this curriculum to over 600 pages of content.

How did FAEW get involved? From this content, lessons needed to be made. FAEW partnered with Dr. Andresen and his students to create lessons. At the same time, Seattle Public Schools’ Board approved the inclusion of the Filipinx American History Curriculum as a course that would count toward their US History credit for graduation (11th grade) and for credit in middle school (8th grade). With the curriculum being offered in SPS came support for lesson writing from Stacia Arnoux.

R.A.C.E.

In 2021-2022, FAEW successfully received a $15,000 grant from Professional Educator Standards Board to support FAEW Professional Growth Plan cohort with particular focus on Social-Emotional Learning and Filipinx American Ethnic Studies. Because of its success, FAEW continued to look for funding to sustain the momentum the organization started. As a result, the FAEW applied for a highly competitive grant through the City of Seattle’s Department of Education Early Learning to support educator diversity, specifically in the development of the Filipinx American Ethnic Studies. On August 12, 2022, FAEW was one of the ten organizations who received $150,000 grant funding. To read the full details of the grant, please click here.

Pass the Philippine Human Rights Act

The Philippines continues to be one of the deadliest countries in the world for land defenders, journalists, trade unionists, educators, and activists. The number of killings under the current Duterte administration— infamous for its deadly "war on drugs"— continues to rise to over 30,000, including over a hundred children. Despite this, since 2016 the U.S. has provided over $600 million taxpayer dollars in military aid to President Duterte and the Philippine government, with paltry human rights restrictions and oversight.

Despite well-documented and ongoing human rights violations, the U.S. government continues to funnel millions of dollars in aid to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP). They are the main perpetrators of human rights violations and these human rights abuses continue under the leadership of current President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

FAEW supports the passage of the PHRA and is against the human rights violations occurring in the Philippines. Our tax dollars should fund public education and fighting the current pandemic— not the continued human rights violations.

What is the Philippine Human Rights Act (PHRA)?
